POWER FOR A VICTORIOUS LIFE TEXT: ACTS 2:1-11
-
-
-
-
iii.
-
-
-
INTRODUCTION 1. Walk through any international airport, and what do you hear? Voices and languages from almost every nation on earth.
-
a. For those of you who are fortunate enough to have a second or third language, you may be able to understand some of the words you hear at the international airport.
b. But for the majority of us, it can be quite bewildering to hear so many voices without understanding.
2. Now I want you to imagine yourself being transported back 2000 years to Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost. There, in the market place, you find Jews from 16 regions of the Mediterranean area – all speaking in their own languages or dialects. 3. Then, all of a sudden, you hear the sound of a mighty, rushing wind, coming from one particularly huge house, but the trees are not moving and you do not feel the wind. Perplexed, you, like the crowd in the market place, run towards this house to see what’s happening. As you run, you hear voices coming from the people in the house and, strangely, you hear your own language being spoken. And you remark: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,[b] 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” (Acts 2:7-11, NIV)
POWER FOR VICTORIOUS LIVING 1. Previously, we learned: When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. (ACTS 2:1-2, NIV)
-
a. The sound of wind that came from heaven is symbolic of the Holy Spirit who is called the “breath of God” (pneuma).
b. The Holy Spirit came and covered the whole house – everyone in the house was covered or immersed in the Holy Spirit. This is the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
c. This is an act of God. At the point of salvation, the Holy Spirit takes a believer and places him or her in the body of Christ. This is non-experiential – you cannot feel anything physically. You don’t shout or tremble, there is no warm feeling. It is a divine act on God’s part.
2. And then, something else happened: 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them. (Acts 2:3-4, NIV)
-
a. After the Holy Spirit covered all who were present in that house, the disciples saw what looked like tongues of fire. No actual fire, but what looked like fire.
b. This fire “separated and came to rest on each of them.”
c. And then, “all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit”
d. Then what happened? They “began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”
3. At salvation, the Holy Spirit baptizes a believer into the body of Christ. This is a divine act of God and you do not experience any feeling. 4. However, when the Holy Spirit fills you, when the power of the Holy Spirit is turned on and He fills every part of your life, you see results, you experience changes. For the disciples, they began to speak in languages they never learned and, subsequently, they were able to do all the wonderful things recorded in the book of Acts of the Apostles. 5. We are not to confuse the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the filling of the Holy Spirit.
-
a. Baptism in the Holy Spirit happens only once, at salvation. It is an act of God and you do not experience any feeling or emotion. Every single believer received the Holy Spirit at the point of salvation. And, this is a permanent thing.
b. The filling of the Holy Spirit happens only if you have been baptized in the Holy Spirit at the point of salvation and the Holy Spirit takes residence in you – your body is now the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19).
c. The filling of the Holy Spirit happens repeatedly throughout your life. In fact, we are urged to “be being filled with the Holy Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). You are being filled with the Holy Spirit each time you yield to Him. So, we are to keep yielding to the Holy Spirit.
6. Every time you yield to the Holy Spirit and are filled by Him, you will experience immediate results because the filling of the Holy Spirit is an experiential thing:
-
a. You will speak to yourselves in songs, hymns, spiritual songs;
b. You will read and study the Word of God and gain wisdom and understanding;
c. Husbands, you will love your wives;
d. Wives, you will respect and obey your husbands;
e. Children, you will honor and obey your father and mother;
f. Parents, you will love your children and not do things to provoke them;
g. If you are an employer, you will treat your workers right;
h. If you are an employee, you will work honestly for your employer.
7. For the disciples who were in the house at the first Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit of God filled each one of them and they spoke in diverse languages that they have never learned. 8. What were they speaking? You see, the 11 disciples (Judas was no longer with them by now) were with Jesus for 3 years:
-
a. They walked and ate with Him;
b. Jesus taught them about the kingdom of God;
c. They witnessed the miracle of Jesus turning water into the best wine;
d. They witnessed miracles of healing;
e. They witnessed the miracle of Jesus creating food to feed two different multitudes – first the 5000 and then the 4000 (when you add women and children, Jesus actually fed about 15000 and 12000 people, respectively);
f. They were there when Jesus raised people from the dead:
-
i. The widow’s son at Nain (Luke 7:11-17)
ii. Jairus’s daughter (Matthew 9:18-26; Mark 5:21-43; Luke 8:40-56)
iii. Lazarus (John 11:1-44)
g. And, they witnessed the events at His crucifixion – when the sky turned dark, followed by an earthquake and the splitting of the veil to the Holy of Holies in the Temple and the raising of Old Testament saints from the dead! h. Then, they themselves were visited by the resurrected Jesus Himself who walked through the wall into the room they were hiding in and greeted them, “Shalom”. i. They were with Jesus when He spent 40 days on earth after His resurrection, teaching them. j. They were there and witnessed His ascension to heaven after He has assured them of the Promise of the Gift of the Holy Spirit.
9. Of course, they did not have full understanding of all that they witnessed and heard while Jesus was with them. But now, they have the Holy Spirit in them and filling them. Now, they have full understanding. They have found their voices!
NOT JUST LANGUAGE, BUT A MESSAGE What happens on this first Christian Pentecost has to do not only with language, but also with the message. The disciples are not just making noises a. They are not even just making “small talk” b. But the Holy Spirit filled them so that now they find their voices and nothing could stop them from declaring the power and the wonderful deeds of God which they have witnessed while they were with Jesus for three years! 2. Because each disciple’s heart was open and waiting for the Holy Spirit, and because the Holy Spirit’s flame touched each person, each one now speaks with new authenticity and new authority and power. 3. Both sides are blessed – the speakers are shocked to find their true voices (a gift from God.) Listeners are shocked to hear firsthand a message from heaven, that God is active here and now. That He is not far 4. You see, for us today, the events of Pentecost seem safe to us, a harmless diversion. But you need to know that the events of the first Pentecost and all subsequent Pentecost are anything but safe because it helps people recognize that God is active here and now and that He is upsetting all our small ways of life! 5. In other words, the Holy Spirit is given to us as a gift so that our lives will be changed! a. Old habits must die to give way to new habits that lead to righteousness; b. Old language must die so that now we speak God’s truth with conviction and power; 6. During the time of the first Pentecost, the manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s power in the lives of the Apostles was the gift of languages, which was used to proclaim God’s mighty deeds. This resulted in the birth of the church when 3000 came on that one day to confessed Christ as Lord and Saviour! 7. By the time Paul defines the filling of the Holy Spirit, it has nothing to do with languages anymore. The first gift of languages has achieved its purpose – to declare the mighty deeds of God among the Jews resulting in the birth of the church. 8. Now, the evidence of a Spirit-filled life can be found in Ephesians 5:
-
a. Being under the influence and control of the Holy Spirit constantly (“be being filled” – Ephesians 5:18)
b. Speak to one another in psalms, hymns, spiritual songs (v.19)
c. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord (v19)
d. Always giving thanks to God for everything (v 20)
e. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ (v21)
f. Wives, submit to husbands as you do to the Lord (v.22)
g. Husbands, love your wives (v. 25)
CONCLUSION 1. If you are a believer, you have been baptized in the Holy Spirit and made one in Christ and in His body (the church). This is positional. It is an act of God and you cannot experience any feeling. 2. After having been baptized in the Holy Spirit, now you are to keep being filled with the Holy Spirit. This is the practical thing. You can only live a victorious Christian life if you yield to the Holy Spirit. 3. There is no mystery if you are still struggling with a powerless Christian life. There is no mystery if Christian husbands and wives do not love each other. There is no mystery you are still living in darkness. 4. You may be a Christian for many years or for a short time and you have been baptized in the Holy Spirit and made one with Christ and His church. However, if you do not yield to the Holy Spirit and be filled by Him, you will not have the power to live a victorious Christian life. 5. Baptism in the Holy Spirit grants you the power, but filling in the Holy Spirit switches on that power!.
